About Adrienne Arsht Center
The Carnival Center for the Performing Arts (recently changed to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performance Arts) is located on Biscayne Boulevard in beautiful downtown Miami. The Center, one of the largest in the U.S., was built on the land that Sears, Roebuck, and Company once occupied over 70 years ago.
The only piece of the old building that was able to be saved was a seven storey tower that the Performing Arts Center managed to incorporate into its new arts center.
Cesar Pelli was chosen to design the 570,000 square feet performing center and the Artec Consultants Company was brought in to finish up with the acoustical work. The combination of the two proved to be the right choice as the construction of the center neared completion.
A four day opening celebration was planned for the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts (formerly known as the Miami Performing Arts Center) and started October 5, 2006 as the glorious new edition to Miami opened its doors to the public for the first time.
The night started with performances by twelve of the top percussion ensembles in Miami while the night sky was filled with fireworks.
The inauguration of the Knight Concert Hall started shortly afterwards with a crowd awing performance by Gloria Estefan.
Those that could afford it paid a whopping $500 per ticket.

The following evening the two resident orchestra companies ( the Concert Association of Florida and the New World Symphony) joined forces to perform a mixture of both classical and contemporary music.
The third night was dedicated to ballet. Two more of the resident companies (the Florida Grand Opera and the Miami City Ballet) gave an amazing performance on the stage of the Ziff Ballet Opera House.
To finish up the festivities on October 8 a huge celebration finale took place both indoors and outdoors. The Target Globalbeat was the perfect end to the 3 preceding days of various performance types. Hundreds of artists turned out for the event and performances were being held anywhere that the Carnival Center could accommodate. There were performances ranging from local home-grown acts all the way up to seasoned Grammy nominated artists.
Over the four days of the opening celebration there was not a shortage of entertainment or talent to be found within the compound now called the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performance Arts.
